Each & Every Step to an Epoxy Flake Floor: A Complete Guide

Are you considering upgrading your garage with an epoxy flake floor? If so, you’re probably wondering what steps are involved and what makes for a durable, long-lasting finish. As professional epoxy flooring experts, we’re here to walk you through every step of the epoxy flake floor installation process — from surface prep to the final topcoat.

Step 1: Concrete Preparation

Proper concrete preparation is the foundation of a flawless epoxy flake floor — and it’s often the most overlooked step. Without it, even the best epoxy won’t adhere properly, and the results won’t last.

We use industrial concrete grinders connected to commercial HEPA-filter vacuums to minimize dust and thoroughly prep the surface. This includes not only the floor itself, but also the edges, corners, and even parts of the wall. Grinding exposes cracks and imperfections, making them ready for repair.

Why is this step so important? Because epoxy needs a properly profiled surface to bond to the concrete. Without it, everything else becomes a waste of time and money.

Step 2: Concrete Repairs

Once the surface is fully ground, it’s time to repair all imperfections.

This includes:

  • Cracks

  • Holes

  • Wall edges

  • Wood interfaces

  • Expansion joints

  • Screw holes

  • Any surface damage

We apply an epoxy crack filler to ensure all gaps are sealed. In some cases, multiple coats are necessary to fill deeper or wider cracks.

Step 3: Epoxy Basecoat Application

With repairs completed, we move on to the epoxy basecoat.
We use a high-quality epoxy that cures slowly, allowing it
to penetrate the concrete for maximum adhesion.

The basecoat is applied using a squeegee and then rolled out evenly with a 10mm roller. After brushing the edges, it’s time to broadcast the vinyl flakes.

Pro tip: We throw more flakes than the surface can hold to ensure full coverage and a beautifully even look. This prevents “bald spots” or areas where the epoxy peeks through the flakes.

We allow the basecoat to cure overnight before moving forward.

Step 4: Scraping Excess Flakes

Since we apply a heavy amount of flakes, the next day we need to scrape and remove the excess.

This step smooths the surface and cuts away any flakes that landed vertically or are sticking up.

Once scraping is done, we vacuum thoroughly to remove all loose flakes. This ensures a clean, even surface ready for the topcoat.

Step 5: UV-Resistant Polyaspartic Topcoat

The final step is applying a clear polyaspartic topcoat.

Unlike traditional epoxy, polyaspartic is:

  • UV-resistant (won’t yellow)

  • Highly impact-resistant

  • Salt-resistant

  • Hot tire–resistant

This makes it the ideal topcoat for garage epoxy flooring.

It seals everything in and gives your floor a durable,
glossy finish that will last for years.
